With a smile
Wednesday, May 7, 2008I wanted to buy an iPod. I’d been planning to get one for the last couple of years but I’d been putting it off due to many reasons: my mobile phone plays music, my computer has great speakers, I have an old but still reliable Discman, i have a mini-component at home, etc. Last Monday I decided I will really buy myself an iPod. Kind of like a present to myself since I didn’t get anything for myself last Christmas.
The iPod I had in mind is the 80GB Classic. In black, which is the same colour as my next MacBook (which I plan to get later this year, replacing my old iBook). I went to 3 shops here in Phnom Penh who claimed they were official resellers and scouted their prices. One store had the lowest price (about $20 less than the other 2) but the staff had tremendously poor English language skills and other than showing me the price in their calculator, they couldn’t tell me anything else. After four years, my Khmer is still rusty, I must admit. I left the store because I had another appointment.
When I came back on Tuesday I was able to speak with the owner of the shop, and I learned that their latest shipment of black, 80GB iPod classic (and other products, I assume) has yet to be released by the customs. He told me that he expected it to be released the next day. He took my number and told me he’d ring me when he’s got the product. I left the shop happy.
That afternoon, while I was sharing a soft and chewy (because it was kept at room temperature) bar of white chocolate at a friend’s house, I felt something loosen in my mouth and mingled with the chocolate. The fixed bridge anchored to my upper left molar got dislodged! Checking it in the toilet, I pulled it out of my mouth and stared at it. The ceramic coating was worn; there was even a hole on the metal underneath.
I asked her if she can fix this but she said it is difficult to remove a fixed bridge. Late last year I discovered I could move the fixed bridge a bit. It seemed that I finally got my wish of being able to replace my fixed bridge. Too bad I’m not in Manila.
This Wednesday morning I went to Pachem Dental Clinic, one of the most expensive (ergo best?) dental clinics here in Phnom Penh. Their clinic looks posh enough. Each dentist has her/ his own assistant/ dental hygienist. The dentist I was assigned to did not look Cambodian; I later learned she was Japanese. I told her what happened and showed her the dislodged fixed bridge. She tried to look for the proper English word to describe said fixed bridge. First she said ‘antique’, then ‘old-fashioned’, before settling on ‘outdated’. She basically echoed what new dentist had said.
So she explained what she planned to do, how many visits it would take to complete the task, and the price, which amounted to about $400.00. Not bad, when I thought about the price in the Philippines. So I agreed and she began the work. I now have temporary fixed bridge; the real one will be placed next week. I feel relieved. I have yet to find out if my health insurance will cover this, though.
Otherwise, it’s bye-bye iPod once again for me. Till next time!

SMS I got this afternoon: Hi Mr Michael. iPod 80GB now available in the shop.

bakit hindi mo namention na nag consult ka rin sakin hahahahahahahaha
Posted by daden at May 10, 2008, 1:33 pmI should have asked you pala. To be fair, magaling naman yung dentist sa Pachem. Di bale, next time I’ll try your dentist, if only because he smells nice!
If I said that, you might receive undue attention. Baka dumami mag-consult sa yo about their dental problems. Prepared ka ba na magpaka-dentista?
Hi Mike,
Mag-ina nga tayo! I am replacing my fixed bridge and jackets - upper set of teeth and it will cost me total of $1300 in Manila! Major expense and therefore I am saying goodbye for the moment to a new power Mac laptop for Iam.

Oh, Mike! You should have tried my dentist! I got a permanent bridge this January. They did an excellent excellent job for only $200! He is a Cambodian dentist trained in NZ, speaks perfect English, good looking and nice smelling. Oh well…
